Pick up any energy drink and turn it over. You'll see a list of ingredients, a nutritional table, and a caffeine disclosure. Most people glance at the can design and move on. That's understandable — the label is dense and the terminology is opaque. But the label is also the only honest thing about the product. Everything the brand wants you to feel is on the front. Everything the brand is legally required to tell you is on the back.
This guide decodes the back of the can — ingredient by ingredient — so you can make an informed choice rather than a hopeful one.
☕ Caffeine
The primary active ingredient in every energy drink. Caffeine works by blocking adenosine receptors — the brain's "you are tired now" signal — and increasing dopamine activity, which improves alertness, mood, and reaction time.
FSSAI mandates that energy drinks sold in India declare caffeine content on the label and cannot exceed 320mg per litre (32mg per 100ml). A standard 250ml can is therefore capped at 80mg under this regulation. Look for this number explicitly — if it isn't declared, that alone is a problem.
Safe daily upper limit for healthy adults: 400mg. A single 250ml can at 80mg is roughly equivalent to one cup of filter coffee.

Taurine
An amino acid naturally occurring in meat and fish. Despite the name, it has no relation to bull bile — that's a persistent myth. Taurine plays a role in regulating electrolyte balance, supporting cardiac function, and reducing oxidative stress. A 2021 review in Nutrients found positive effects on mental fatigue at typical energy drink doses. Generally considered safe and beneficial at standard doses.
Vitamin B3 (Niacin)
B3 plays a central role in converting food into cellular energy (NAD+ production). Most Indians are not deficient, but supplemental B3 at energy drink doses is well within safe limits. High doses (above 35mg in some forms) can cause a harmless "niacin flush" — a temporary reddening of skin. This isn't dangerous but can feel alarming if unexpected.
Vitamin B6
Involved in over 100 enzyme reactions in the body, including neurotransmitter synthesis (serotonin, dopamine). The doses in energy drinks are typically at or just above the recommended daily intake — not excessive, and there's good evidence for cognitive support. Toxicity requires sustained very high doses over months, well beyond what a single can provides.
Vitamin B12
B12 deficiency is remarkably common in India — studies suggest 47% of the urban population may be deficient, partly due to vegetarian diets and limited animal protein intake. B12 is essential for nerve function, red blood cell production, and DNA synthesis. The doses in energy drinks won't correct a serious deficiency, but they're a meaningful daily contribution.
This is where energy drinks vary the most, and where labels deserve the closest attention. High-sugar variants (25g+ per 250ml) deliver a glycaemic spike that compounds the caffeine effect short-term but causes a pronounced crash 60–90 minutes later. Look for total sugars on the nutritional panel — not just "no added sugar" claims on the front, which can be misleading under Indian labelling rules.
Ginseng / Guaraná / Herbal extracts
Many energy drinks list herbal extracts as ingredients — ginseng, guaraná, ginkgo biloba. These aren't necessarily harmful, but the evidence for their specific claims at the doses used in a 250ml can is thin. Guaraná also contains caffeine (roughly 2–4% by weight), which means products listing both caffeine and guaraná may have higher total caffeine than the declared figure alone suggests.
Artificial colours & preservatives
Not all artificial additives are equal. FSSAI maintains an approved list of food additives permissible in energy drinks. Some synthetic dyes (e.g. Sunset Yellow E110, Tartrazine E102) are permitted in India but restricted or banned in certain other markets due to links with hyperactivity in children. Adults face no proven risk at typical doses, but it's worth knowing what you're consuming.
Carbonated water
The base of nearly all energy drinks. Carbonation slightly accelerates gastric emptying, which contributes to the faster onset of energy drink effects versus hot coffee. No health concern at typical consumption volumes. If you have acid reflux or IBS, carbonated beverages may aggravate symptoms — something to consider regardless of the product.

If any of the above are missing from a can you're considering, that's a compliance issue — and a reason to put it back on the shelf. A brand operating seriously in the Indian market will have all of these in place.

➤ Four Red Flags on Any Energy Drink Label
No caffeine quantity declared. FSSAI requires it. If a brand hasn't printed the mg per serve, they're either non-compliant or hiding a number they're not proud of.
"Proprietary blend" with no breakdown. This phrase exists to obscure how much of each ingredient is actually present. A brand confident in its formulation doesn't need to hide behind it.
High sugar + high caffeine combination. Check the nutritional panel. More than 20g of sugars in a 250ml can means the "energy" is largely glycaemic, not cognitive — and the crash will follow.
Missing FSSAI licence number. Every legally sold food product in India must display an FSSAI licence. Its absence is not a minor oversight — it means the product hasn't been properly cleared for sale.

📋 How to Read a Label in 30 Seconds
Find the caffeine figure — in mg per 100ml and per serve. Anything above 32mg/100ml is at the FSSAI regulatory ceiling. Note it.
Check total sugars — on the nutritional panel, not the front of the can. Under 10g per 250ml is reasonable. Over 20g is a sugar drink with caffeine in it.
Verify the FSSAI number — it should be a 14-digit number starting with your state code. If it's missing, stop here.
Scan the ingredients list — if it has guaraná AND caffeine listed, the actual caffeine total may be higher than disclosed. Factor that in.
Look for the age restriction — FSSAI requires "not recommended for persons under 18" to appear on the label. Its absence is a red flag.
The Informed Consumer's Advantage
Energy drinks aren't inherently good or bad — they're formulations, and formulations vary enormously. The gap between a responsibly made 80mg-caffeine, low-sugar drink and a 160mg-caffeine, 28g-sugar drink is significant in terms of how your body responds. The label tells you everything you need to distinguish them.
Thirty seconds of label reading is all it takes to move from a hopeful purchase to an informed one. In a category where marketing budgets are large and transparency isn't always rewarded, the back of the can is the only place where the brand is legally required to tell you the truth.
